Visitor arrivals for July 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 789,407 in July 2021, an uplift of 49.4% month-on-month and a boost of 966.7% year-on-year. Numbers of overnight visitors (412,735) and same-day visitors (376,672) bounced back by 1,634.5% and 650.2% year-on-year respectively. The average length of stay of same-day visitors (0.1 day) remained unchanged year-on-year and that of overnight visitors (3.4 days) shortened by 1.3 days; yet, the average duration for visitors increased by 0.5 day to 1.8 days on account of a growth of 20.1 percentage points in the proportion of overnight visitors (52.3%).

Electoral Affairs Commission optimising its COVID-19 contingency plan ahead of Legislative Assembly Election
The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election has prepared a contingency plan and epidemic-prevention measures, to cover the official campaigning period and for election day itself. This is in order to ensure Macao ID holders registered to do so, can exercise their right to vote, despite the public health and safety issues wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Restrictive measures on the living areas of the 4 confirmed cases of COVID-19 lifted

In response to the four confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Macao on 3 August, the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre had, under the zone-specific, multi-level targeted approach to epidemic prevention and control and having regard to the level of risk, immediately implemented restrictive measures in the living areas or sites of activities of the confirmed cases on the same day.

UM welcomes nearly 3,500 new students; rector encourages students to cherish opportunity to study at UM
Today (18 August) is the first day of the new semester at the University of Macau (UM). The university welcomed close to 3,500 new undergraduate and postgraduate students. UM Rector Yonghua Song delivered a welcome speech online. In the speech, He encouraged students to cherish the variety of opportunities provided by the university and to work hard in order to grow into patriotic, globally minded, internationally competitive, socially responsible, and innovative individuals with the ability to contribute to society and create fulfilling lives for themselves.

Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for June 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 54% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year rise in receipts in June 2021, a drop of 4 percentage points from May; the corresponding proportion of Chinese Restaurants (63%) fell by 7 percentage points, while the share of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (39%) rose by 12 percentage points. Meanwhile, the proportion of interviewed retailers recording a year-on-year sales rise in June (81%) went up by 4 percentage points over the preceding month. All of the interviewed retailers of Leather Goods and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery registered a year-on-year sales increase as in May. Besides, the corresponding shares of Supermarkets (33%) and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (80%) grew by 11 percentage points and 10 percentage points from May respectively, whereas the share of Adults’ Clothing Retailers (76%) dropped by 14 percentage points. The Business Performance Index (BPI) values that reflect the trend of year-on-year changes in receipts of restaurants & similar establishments (63.6) and retail trade (83.6) were both higher than 50, implying that the business of these two industries in June fared better compared to the same month last year.

Results of visitor expenditure survey for the 2nd Quarter of 2021

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) grew by 15.9% quarter-to-quarter to MOP7.16 billion in the second quarter of 2021, attributable to a 25.9% increase in visitor arrivals. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP6.38 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP777 million) rose by 14.1% and 32.0% quarter-to-quarter respectively. In the first half of 2021, total spending of visitors amounted to MOP13.34 billion.

Households Not Receiving Notification Letter Asked to Call Census Hotline Great Prizes Await Lucky Respondents
The 2021 Population Census has entered the final stage of data collection. The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) appeals to the households who have not completed the Census questionnaire to respond to the Census by Saturday (21 Aug), and calls on the households who did not receive the notification letter to contact DSEC.

Macao Grand Prix Museum reopens on 18 August “Stay, Dine and See Macao” local tours’ resumption until further notice
The Macao Grand Prix Museum and the Ritz Building including the Tourist Information counter and the exhibition hall, under the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), will be reopened to the public starting from 18 August. In addition, “Stay, Dine and See Macao” local tour itineraries remain suspended until further notice.
