According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) and commercial real estate loans (CRELs) both decreased in December 2021. With regard to the outstanding balances, both RMLs and CRELs witnessed increases.

The 2022 Sands China Macao International 10K, jointly organized by the Sports Bureau and the General Association of Athletics of Macau, will be held on 20 March. Two race categories will be held, namely 10K and Fun Run (approximately 5km), with a total of 10,000 places available. Registration starts from 12 February for the 10K race and from 13 February for the Fun Run. A press conference was held today (9 February) by the Organizing Committee to announce the title sponsor, as well as introducing the race details and registration arrangements.

Professor Tam Kam Weng in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), has been elected an International STEM Ambassador of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest organisation in electrical and electronic technology. Prof Tam is the only scholar from Macao to have received this honour this year. In this position, he will assist IEEE in researching and formulating policies for international STEM education as well as hosting STEM training activities and competitions.

The “2022 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition” (2022MIECF) will be held from 31 March to 2 April 2022 under the theme of “Commitment to Green Development, Moving Towards the Dual Carbon Goals”. Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the overall residential property price index for October - December 2021 increased by 0.3% over the previous period (September - November 2021) to 267.6. The indices for the Macao Peninsula (267.2) and Taipa & Coloane (269.4) rose by 0.3% and 0.5% respectively.

Lasting from 31^st January to 6^th February, the seven-day Spring Festival Golden Week of Mainland China has come to an end. The preliminary statistics show that Macao welcomed over 110,000 visitor arrivals during the Spring Festival Golden Week while the average occupancy rate of local hotels was 63.8%.

A research team led by Assistant Professor Dai Yunlu in the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has developed a novel metal-phenolic network to potentiate the activation of stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway within tumour microenvironment for advanced radiotherapy. The novel nanomedicine is expected to improve the efficacy of immunotherapy. The research findings have been published in Advanced Materials.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 1,082 new companies were incorporated in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of 455 year-on-year. Number of new companies operating in Wholesale & Retail Trade (389) and Business Services (257) went down by 206 and 144 respectively. Total value of registered capital soared by 278.2% year-on-year to MOP539 million, attributable to the incorporation of new Business Services companies with relatively large capital during the quarter. Companies in dissolution totalled 194 in the fourth quarter, and the value of registered capital of these companies amounted to MOP88 million.

According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the total number of personal credit cards and debit cards issued by banks in Macao increased in the fourth quarter of 2021. The turnover of credit cards and debit cards both witnessed increases from a quarter earlier. Meanwhile, the number and the value of transactions of local mobile payment tools continued to rise on a quarterly basis.
