UM members’ paper on celebrity endorsement published in Journal of Advertising

Liu Yongdan, a PhD student in the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) at the University of Macau (UM), and Prof Matthew Liu Ting Chi, a professor in the faculty, co-published a paper titled ‘Big Star Undercover: The Reinforcing Effect of Attenuated Celebrity Endorsers Faces on Consumers Brand Memory’ in the latest issue of the Journal of Advertising, one of the top journals in the field of communication marketing.

IAM urges residents to check drainage systems of air-conditioners

As summer approaches and the weather turns hot, there is a growing number of cases of water dripping from air-conditioners resulting from the increase in frequency of use of air-conditioners. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) urges members of the public to check the air-conditioners before using them. If any issue is found, professional air-conditioner technicians should be invited to conduct on-site inspection so as to avoid affecting others and environmental hygiene.

Consumer Report issue 321 now published Feature on using chopping board included

The Consumer Council conducted a survey on the habit and hygiene awareness of consumers on using different kinds of chopping boards. Result shows that consumers mainly use chopping boards made with wood, plastic, and bamboo, a feature on using chopping boards including the pros and cons of the said materials is included in issue 321 Consumer Report.


External merchandise trade statistics for April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise import fell by 44.1% year-on-year to MOP3.84 billion in April 2020, of which imports of Gold jewellery, Handbags & wallets and Watches declined by 92.2%, 76.1% and 69.6% respectively. On the other hand, imports of Other textile made-up articles, which comprised mostly face masks, surged by 174.3%. Total merchandise export amounted to MOP716 million, down by 24.8% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP632 million) went down by 25.2%, with that of Watches falling by 63.8%. Meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP84 million) dropped by 21.4%, with that of Copper & articles thereof reducing by 16.3%. Merchandise trade deficit in April totalled MOP3.12 billion.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 110 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in April 2020, and number of available guest rooms decreased by 12.3% year-on-year to 34,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the following statistics. With a continued decline in number of overnight visitors in April following the tightened quarantine measures for arrivals in late March, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 78.6 percentage points year-on-year to 12.9%. The rate of 5-star hotels (6.6%) reduced by 85.9 percentage points, while the rates of 2-star hotels (37.4%) and guesthouses (36.3%) dropped by 40.1 percentage points and 28.5 percentage points respectively.


Announcement of the 38th Macao Young Musicians Competition Schedule

Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the 38th Macao Young Musicians Competition, dedicated to the category of Chinese and Western Instruments and Vocal Music, will start on 15 August this year. The provisional Competition Schedule is now available on the Macao Young Musicians Competition website (www.icm.gov.mo/cjmm).


UM, BOC Macau co-organise workshop again to help SMEs grasp opportunities during epidemic

The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and the Bank of China Macau Branch recently held the second series of Online Workshop for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), titled ‘Online Operations for SMEs and Electronic Payments’. Participants say that the workshop has allowed them to gain a better understanding of digital marketing in Macao, which has in turn boosted their confidence about expanding their businesses on the internet.
