MAM calls for submissions of proposals for the “Macao – China Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition”
The “59th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition” will be held in April 2022 in Venice, Italy. The Macao Art Museum (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is calling for submission of proposals for the Macao-China Pavilion at the Biennale from today until 13 August. All interested teams are welcome to submit their proposals.

Cartography and Cadastre Bureau launched the updated version of “GeoGuide for emergency”- – map for emergency in online and offline version
In order to let the public obtain the latest geographic information for emergency via mobile phone, Cartography and Cadastre Bureau has just launched an updated version 3.2 of “GeoGuide for emergency” mobile map App, based on the information provided by the relevant departments in early 2021.

“Macao Week in Shanghai” will be staged in early June Manifesting Macao’s “tourism +” glamour
As the pandemic situation remains stable, the Macao Special Administrative Region Government has progressively unrolled an array of physical initiatives to promote the destination in Mainland China, including a series of “Macao Weeks”. Among the series, the “Macao Week in Shanghai” roadshow will be held from 3 – 7 June. Following the “Macao Weeks” held in Beijing last year as well as in Hangzhou and Nanjing, Jiangsu this year, the “Macao Week” will be staged in Shanghai, featuring a mega roadshow, gastronomic promotion, Macao tourism and MICE presentation seminar, business matching and networking to promote Macao’s diverse elements of “tourism +” and showcase Macao as a healthy, safe and quality destination. The event seeks to attract Mainland visitors for travel and spending in Macao to spur tourism and economic revival.

Macao confirms 51st COVID-19 case, involving imported infection
The Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre confirmed in the late evening of Monday (24 May) a new imported case of COVID-19, taking to 51 the tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Macao since the epidemic alert began in 2020.

Distribution work of Wealth Partaking Scheme 2021 finished
The distribution work of 2021 Wealth Partaking Scheme started on 12 April this year and finished on 21 May which was five weeks less than the previous year. In the course of implementation, 484,824 beneficiaries had received the cash premium by means of bank transfer, accounting for MOP$ 4,732,560,000, while 244,599 crossed cheques had been mailed, which summed up to MOP$ 2,387,078,000. Until the present time, 126,311 cheques were honoured, representing 51.6% of the total number of cheques issused.

UM-led research team unveils groundbreaking computational encryption with metasurface
A joint research team, formed by researchers of the University of Macau (UM), Wuhan University (WHU), Beijing Normal University (BNU), the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and the University of Birmingham (UB), has proposed a groundbreaking image encryption scheme that uses a single metasurface as a reusable generator of different keys to encode various secret images in a computational way. The study has been published online in Science Advances, a sub-publication of the prestigious international journal Science.

Health statistics 2020
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the 4 hospitals in Macao provided a total of 1,715 in-patient beds in 2020, an increase of 87 year-on-year. Number of in-patients went down by 13.0% year-on-year to 54,000, while the average hospital stay rose by 0.2 day to 7.6 days. With an increase in number of in-patient beds and a decrease in total hospital stays of in-patients, the occupancy rate of in-patient beds dropped by 12.1 percentage points year-on-year to 66.2%.

Cultural Affairs Bureau performs regular website maintenance on 28 May
In order to ensure the proper operation of its information technology system, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) will perform regular maintenance on its servers on 28 May (Friday) from 8pm to the early morning hours of the following day. Therefore, the operation of several websites will be suspended, including the Cultural Affairs Bureau website and its sub-websites, the websites of the Cultural Heritage of Macao, the Macao World Heritage, the Macao Conservatory, the Archives of Macao, the Macao Museum of Art, the Macao Museum, the Macao Cultural Centre, the “Macao Arts Festival”, the “Macao Young Musicians Competition” and the Macao Cultural and Creative Industries, among others. In addition, the Booking System for the use of Artistic and Cultural Spaces, IC’s Activity Registration System, the Community Funding Application System, the Inquiry System of Progress of Application for Filming, the Cultural Affairs Bureau Online Book Shop, the mobile applications “Macao eBooks” and “WH Macau” will also be unavailable during the above-mentioned period. The normal operation of the service will resume once the maintenance work is completed.

Cultural Affairs Bureau hosts various activities in June to celebrate China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day
On the occasion of the “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” to be held on 12 June this year, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) will host a series of exciting activities, including the highlight “Genesis and Spirit – Showcase of Anhui Intangible Cultural Heritage”, which will comprehensively present the cultural features as well as the exquisite and profound intangible cultural heritage of Anhui Province. During the period of the event, workshops and concerts will be held and some World Heritage sites will be open to the public with free admission in a bid to enhance residents’ and tourists’ knowledge of Macao’s cultural heritage.

Results of retail sales survey for 1st quarter of 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that value of retail sales for the first quarter of 2021 totalled MOP18.75 billion, up by 68.0% year-on-year. After removing the effect of price changes, the sales volume index soared by 76.4% year-on-year.
