UM scholar’s study documents Chinese researchers’ efforts to improve Chinese language teaching and learning

Gong Yang, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education of the University of Macau (UM), has published an article on Chinese language teaching and learning worldwide in Language Teaching. As the first review article on Chinse language education published in this journal, it has been cited many times since it was published online in January this year.


Results of survey on manpower needs and wages for the 1st quarter 2020

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released results of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the first quarter of 2020. Survey coverage for this quarter comprises Manufacturing; Hotels; Restaurants; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Insurance; Activities Auxiliary to Financial Intermediation (formerly referred to as Financial Intermediation Activities); Child-care and Elderly Care, and the coverage has been extended to Other Financial Intermediation except Banking. This survey excludes the self-employed, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies.


Employment survey for February-April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that owing to the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia, the general unemployment rate for February-April 2020 increased by 0.1 percentage point to 2.2% from the previous period (January-March 2020), and the unemployment rate of local residents rose by 0.2 percentage points to 3.1%. The underemployment rate grew by 1.3 percentage points to 2.1%.


Macao Orchestra and Macao Chinese Orchestra cancel concerts scheduled for June

Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, many performers will not be able to visit Macao. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) has decided to cancel the concerts “Music at World Heritage: Romantic Orchestral Music” and “Music at World Heritage: Beethoven Symphony No. 1” by the Macao Orchestra on 5 June and 26 June respectively; and the family musical theatre “Music Adventure III” and “Chinese Musical Milestones – Wang Fujian and Macao Chinese Orchestra” by the Macao Chinese Orchestra on 6 June and 21 June respectively.

UM members’ paper on celebrity endorsement published in Journal of Advertising

Liu Yongdan, a PhD student in the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) at the University of Macau (UM), and Prof Matthew Liu Ting Chi, a professor in the faculty, co-published a paper titled ‘Big Star Undercover: The Reinforcing Effect of Attenuated Celebrity Endorsers Faces on Consumers Brand Memory’ in the latest issue of the Journal of Advertising, one of the top journals in the field of communication marketing.

Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau announces that the reprint label stamp “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” will be available at the automatic stamp vending machines in Macao, starting gradually from 9:00a.m. on 8th June 2020.


IAM urges residents to check drainage systems of air-conditioners

As summer approaches and the weather turns hot, there is a growing number of cases of water dripping from air-conditioners resulting from the increase in frequency of use of air-conditioners. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) urges members of the public to check the air-conditioners before using them. If any issue is found, professional air-conditioner technicians should be invited to conduct on-site inspection so as to avoid affecting others and environmental hygiene.
