Prof Liu Jianhong, Distinguished Professor and associate dean of the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Social Sciences, has been appointed an advisor to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Asia-Pacific Regional Centre for Excellence on Criminal Justice Statistics, in recognition of his work related to illegal drug problems and crime prevention.

The second review of the “7^th Subsidy Programme for Fashion Design on Sample Making”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), has been completed and a total of eight applicants were selected. In accordance with the Chief Executive’s Order No. 50/2020, the special measures imposed by Clause 2 of Article 1 of the Chief Executive’s Order No. 27/2020 will be lifted, effective from 0:00, 2 March 2020. Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dropped by 8.1% year-on-year in real terms in the fourth quarter of 2019, a steeper decline compared to the previous quarter, which was mainly attributable to a further decrease in exports of services. External demand continued to slow; exports of services fell by 7.5% year-on-year, with exports of gaming services and other tourism services reducing by 9.8% and 7.0% respectively. Exports of goods went down by 6.2%. As regards domestic demand, investment plunged by 13.9% year-on-year, whereas private consumption expenditure and government final consumption expenditure rose by 2.7% and 1.9% respectively.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for January 2020 amounted to MOP1.15 billion, down by 24.8% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP996 million) decreased by 28.3%, with that of Diamond & diamond jewellery and Watches tumbling by 76.4% and 44.5% respectively. Value of domestic exports (MOP154 million) rose by 9.8%, with that of Garments surging by 428.0%. Total merchandise import slid by 3.6% year-on-year to MOP8.48 billion, of which imports of Motor cars & motorcycles and Mobile phones declined by 58.3% and 33.3% respectively; meanwhile, imports of Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products and Handbags & wallets expanded by 55.2% and 22.3% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in January totalled MOP7.33 billion.

According to the information of the World Health Organization, Italy and Iran are experiencing severe outbreaks of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection with cases exported to multiple countries. In order to step up prevention, the MSAR Government has decided that starting from 12:00 noon today (29^th February), individuals who have been to Italy or Iran within the past 14 days prior to their entry into Macao must, at the discretion of the health authorities, undergo medical observation in isolation for 14 days at a designated venue, without prejudice to other epidemic prevention measures of the MSAR Government. For Macao residents, medical observation can be carried out at a domestic venue deemed appropriate by the health authorities, whereas non-Macao residents will be placed at a designated hotel at their own expenses.
