Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey – 31 December 2023

According to the statistics released today (26 June) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, on 31 December 2023, investment of Macao residents (including individuals, the government and other legal entities but excluding Macao’s foreign exchange reserves) in securities issued by unrelated non-residents reached MOP1,104.5 billion at current market value, representing a rise of 3.0% and 9.7% when compared with end-June 2023 and end-2022 respectively. Among the various instruments of portfolio investment, equity securities (including mutual funds and investment trust units), long-term debt securities and short-term debt securities were valued at MOP335.3 billion, MOP693.8 billion and MOP75.5 billion respectively. As compared with a year ago, the market values of equity securities and long-term debt securities increased by 4.4% and 16.5% whereas that of short-term debt securities decreased by 16.4%.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for May 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that inbound package tour visitors leapt by 187.3% year-on-year to 242,000 in May 2024, with those from mainland China soaring by 173.0% to 219,000. International tour visitors jumped by 522.2% to 18,000, with those coming from the Republic of Korea (7,000) and India (4,000) surging by 620.7% and 1,662.4% respectively.


Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15 temporarily closed for enhancement works from 1 July

In order to facilitate the requalification and utilisation of historical and cultural resources and enable the conversion of historic districts into new diversified cultural tourism attractions, the relevant Macao SAR Government services are collaborating with some of the biggest local tourism and recreational companies in order to promote the revitalisation of some of the city’s historic districts. In this context, in reference to the revitalisation plan for Lai Chi Vun Shipyards, the Galaxy Entertainment Group will be developing the first phase of enhancement works at the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15, from 1 July. In order to ensure public safety and enable the execution of the referred necessary works, the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15 will be temporarily closed to the public from the indicated date onwards. Guided tours and shuttle bus services will also be suspended during the mentioned period of works. The project is expected to be completed in December of the current year.



DSEDJ holds World School Basketball Championship 2024—Sharing and Exchange Session for Youth and Students in Celebration of Macao’s Return to the Motherland

The World School Basketball Championship 2024 (“WSC Basketball”), organised by the International School Sport Federation (ISF) and hosted by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, is currently taking place in Macao. This year marks the double celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. It is particularly significant for Macao SAR to be the host of this world-class school basketball tournament in the name of Macao, China. To this end, the Education and Youth Development Bureau has held a sharing and exchange session for youth and students to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland during the championship. In the event, the DSEDJ invited Mr Du Feng, main coach and former member of the China Men’s National Basketball Team, Secretary of Guangdong Basketball and Volleyball Management Centre, main coach of Guangdong Southern Tigers, as well as Mr Zhou Qi, member of the China Men’s National Basketball Team and member of Guangdong Southern Tigers to share, exchange and have basketball training practices with more than 400 teachers and students. The sharing session aimed at letting students understand the development achievements of our nation and Macao in rich and diverse forms, and pass on the spirit of patriotism and love for the country and for Macao.


Exhibition “How Words Fly – Exhibition of Donations from Local Writers” inaugurated at the House of Macao Literature Cultural and creative café at the annex building enters in operation

In order to promote the development of Macao’s literature, showcase the power of local literature, and pay tribute to donors from all walks of life, the exhibition “How Words Fly – Exhibition of Donations from Local Writers”, specially curated by the House of Macao Literature under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was inaugurated today (25 June) at the House of Macao Literature. The opening ceremony was held in a lively atmosphere and was officiate by the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Leong Wai Man; the Chief of the Division of Culture and Sports of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Bai Bing; the President of the Macau Pen Club, Tong Mui Siu; and the representative of Macao writer donors, Iau Chi Vai, and was attended by a number of donors from the literary circle and representatives of their families.


UTM held 'Research Symposium on Event Studies' to promote industry innovative development

The Macao University of Tourism (UTM) and the School of Tourism Management at the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) jointly held the ‘Research Symposium on Event Studies’ in Mong-Há Campus at UTM on 25 June. Scholars were invited to discuss the development and latest trends in events research. The Symposium aims to provide a platform for academic exchange among scholars for advancing research and innovative thinking in the events industry. The Symposium is supported by the China region of the Event Management Journal, a highly-regarded journal in this field of study.



Cultural Affairs Bureau calls for stall operators to participate in the “Craft Market in the Greater Bay Area” in Guangzhou

In order to strengthen exchange and cooperation in the cultural and creative industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) holds the “Craft Market in the Greater Bay Area” and the participation of local cultural and creative entities in the Guangzhou market in August. Applications for stalls are open from today until 2 July, and application is free.


World School Basketball Championship 2024 kicks off in Macao

The opening ceremony of World School Basketball Championship 2024 (“WSC Basketball”), organised by the International School Sport Federation (ISF) and hosted by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, was held on 24 June at Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion in Macao. Ms Ao Ieong U, the representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, announced the official opening of World School Basketball Championship 2024, marking the first time Macao hosts an international secondary school basketball championship. This year’s WSC Basketball has attracted 37 teams from 20 countries and regions to Macao to compete for the championship.
