Consumer Price Index (CPI) for April 2024
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Composite CPI for April 2024 rose by 0.92% year-on-year. Among the various sections of goods and services, the price indices of Education (+5.05%), Health (+3.02%) and Clothing & Footwear (+2.54%) saw notable year-on-year growth. In addition, the price indices of Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (+1.34%) and Housing & Fuels (+0.52%) increased owing to higher charges for eating out as well as dearer prices of liquefied petroleum gas and electricity. On the other hand, the price indices of Transport (-3.49%) and Communication (-0.07%) dropped. The CPI-A and CPI-B recorded respective increases of 0.88% and 0.98% year-on-year.

Gross domestic product for the 1st quarter of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 25.7% year-on-year in real terms in the first quarter of 2024, on account of the revival of the local economy underpinned by thriving exports of services as well as steady private consumption and gross fixed capital formation. The local economy has recovered to 87.2% of its size in the same quarter of 2019; exports of gaming services and exports of other tourism services grew by 62.7% and 14.8% year-on-year respectively, and domestic demand (including private consumption expenditure, government final consumption expenditure and investment) rose by 3.4%. The implicit deflator of GDP, which measures the overall changes in prices, went up by 2.3% year-on-year to 106.8.

The organiser held a press meeting today (23 May) in the Meeting Room of The Londoner Macao, in which the Asia’s “Queen of Songs”, Frances Yip, Hong Kong singer Bo Luk and the Concertmaster of the Macao Chinese Orchestra, Zhang Yueru, met with the local media to share their thoughts on the concert and introduce the highlights of the programme.

Results of retail sales survey for 1st quarter of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the value of retail sales decreased by 12.5% year-on-year to MOP20.71 billion in the first quarter of 2024, mainly due to the high comparison base in the same quarter last year resulting from an upsurge in demand amid the resumption of local economic activity. The figure represented an increase of 1.2% as compared with the first quarter of 2019. After removing the effect of price changes, the sales volume index declined by 17.8% year-on-year but rose by 2.7% over the first quarter of 2019.

Health statistics 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 1,980 doctors, 728 Chinese medicine doctors/Chinese herbalists and 2,980 nurses in Macao at the end of 2023, up by 15, 4 and 117 respectively year-on-year, equivalent to 2.9 doctors (same as 2022), 1.1 Chinese medicine doctors/Chinese herbalists (same as 2022) and 4.4 nurses (+0.1) per 1,000 population.
