A research team led by Jia Yanwei, assistant professor in the Institute of Microelectronics at the University of Macau (UM), has developed a microfluidic system for drug screening using primary tumour cells, which can offer individual cancer patients a tailored treatment plan that exhibits the best therapeutic results. The system is expected to be used by clinicians in medication guidance, thereby realising the commercialisation of research results and facilitating technological innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The research findings have been published in the internationally renowned journal Nature Communications.

The latest issue of the Journal of One Country Two Systems Studies (Vol. 51), edited by the “One Country Two Systems” Research Centre of MPU, has been published. This issue features 11 articles that aim to provide the public with insights into the “One Country, Two Systems” policy and establish an academic platform for its study. 2024 marks the twin anniversaries of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. In order to support the country's "Belt and Road Initiative" and enhance Macao's role as a platform for promoting cooperation and exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in various fields, the "8th World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition” aims to facilitate cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and showcase the spiritual identity and cultural essence of Chinese civilization on a global scale. The competition, co-organized by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and Macao Polytechnic University, has its grand launch on June 5th. Students from around the world are welcome to register for the competition.

The “Global Exhibitions Day” was recently held in Macao. The event focused on promoting industry progress and economic growth, achieving sustainable development, and strengthening connections and exchanges, the event also reviewed the achievements of Macao’s MICE industry in many aspects in recent years, including a local industry leader being elected as the vice chairman of a special committee in the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) in 2023, as well as the appointment of another local MICE professional as the Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Region by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

In order to promote communication, collaboration and resource sharing in the field of creative arts in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, while enhancing the level of cooperation in the creative arts among the three regions and bringing together the research strengths of elite universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the field of creative arts, Macao Polytechnic University, Sun Yat-Sen University, South China University of Technology, South China Normal University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangdong University of Finance and Economics, and the Education University of Hong Kong jointly established the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Creative Arts". The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design at the Macao Polytechnic University, Mei-Kei Lai, along with faculty members and students, visited the Education University of Hong Kong to attend the inauguration ceremony and the first conference. To strengthen exchange and cooperation with the national language translation sector, a delegation led by Vice-Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), Lei Ngan Lin, visited the China International Communications Group (CICG) on May 7, where they were warmly received by Vice-Director of CICG, Liu Dawei. The purpose of this visit was to further the comprehensive cooperation between MPU, CICG, and the China Translators Association in the fields as international dissemination, cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, promotion of scientificizing the translation qualification examinations, etc., to facilitate the language studies and the training of qualified personnel in translation. MPU is the first examination center for the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) in the Hong Kong and Macao regions. In a friendly atmosphere, both parties reviewed the productive results achieved in the cooperation over the past years, exchanged views, and reached various consensuses on the new trends in the development of the language service sector in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In order to contribute to the construction of Macao as "a base for exchange and cooperation to promote multicultural coexistence with Chinese culture predominance," students of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) undertook pedagogical internships in various secondary schools in Macao. These internships enhanced their teaching skills and techniques, establishing a solid foundation for the future international teaching of the Chinese language, and achieving fruitful results.
