In an effort to continue to promote the integration of Macao enterprises into the development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin (the Cooperation Zone), the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Economic Development Bureau of the Cooperation Zone jointly organized the “Briefing Session on Support Policies for Macao Ideas’ Enterprises to Set up Operations in the Cooperation Zone” in Macao on 6 December. At the briefing session, Macao Ideas’ enterprises were introduced to the first targeted preferential policy released by the authorities of the Cooperation Zone for Macao-funded enterprises, and updated with its details such as specific content and application conditions of the one-off incentives for setting up operations in the Cooperation Zone. The event was attended by more than 40 representatives of Macao enterprises and led to dynamic exchange session.

According to statistics released today (12 December) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) fell whereas those of commercial real estate loans (CRELs) rose month-on-month in October 2023. With regard to the outstanding balances, both RMLs and CRELs witnessed declines on a monthly basis.

To promote the cultivation of international English talents in Macao and to promote Macao to serve as an English learning and training base in the Greater Bay Area, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) hosted the 22nd Macao-wide English Speech Contest & 29th “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest. Nearly 60 schools from universities, secondary schools and primary schools in Macao participated. The finals were held recently at the MPU Auditorium. After fierce competition, MPU students finally won the championship and first runner-up in the college category of the Contest. The champion will represent Macao in the National English Speech Contest. Lily Lim, the representative of the organizer and Deputy Director of MPU-Bell Centre of English said that the Macao-wide English Speech Contest has been cooperating with China Daily in 2005 to organize the "21st Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest. It aims to provide young students in Macao with opportunities to meet and exchange with national elites, improve students' English speaking skills, and cultivate their pioneering and innovative spirits, as well as telling the story of Macao.

The University of Macau (UM) held a Doctor honoris causa Lecture titled ‘A Long Journey with the Fascinating (Micro)electronics’, with Franco Maloberti, member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Division I Director (2022-2023) of IEEE, and honorary doctor of UM, as the speaker. During the talk, Prof Maloberti shared his experience in microelectronics research. He also met with UM’s management and researchers to discuss the development of cutting-edge research.

The Third Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (SKL-AMSV) of the University of Macau (UM) held its first meeting. During the meeting, committee members reviewed the development of the laboratory. They recognised the laboratory’s development direction and provided suggestions for its future development as well as the industrialisation of its research results.

The Macao Special Administrative Region has received the notification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyzstan forwarded by the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR that, holders of the Macao SAR Passport can enter the Kyrgyzstan without visa for a maximum stay of 30 days .

The PATA Annual Summit 2024, one of the signature events organized each year by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), will be held in May in Macao. A delegation from PATA visited Macao last week in preparation for the event, which is slated to gather in the city tourism industry leaders from across the region, while also providing a firsthand update about Macao’s “tourism +” offerings and contributing to raise the destination’s profile abroad.
