Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 120 hotel establishments offered accommodation services to the public in August 2022, an increase of 5 year-on-year; number of available guest rooms rose by 4.1% year-on-year to 37,000. Data on hotel establishments designated for medical observation and self-health monitoring were excluded in the compilation of the results. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms in August dropped by 2.0 percentage points year-on-year to 36.4%, with the rates for 3-star hotels and 4-star hotels decreasing by 12.2 percentage points and 6.4 percentage points respectively.

The 31^st issue of Books and the City, published by the Macao Public Library under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is now available to the public. Themed “Discovering Beauty by Reading through the City”, this issue of Books and the City interviewed two reading leaders from the event “4•23 Reading in the City” in 2022 and four institutions participating in reading spots to share their experiences of participation in the event and the pleasure that reading brings.

A research team led by Qu Songnan, professor in the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, University of Macau (UM), has proposed a strategy to prepare near-infrared (NIR) carbon nanodots by fusing large conjugated molecules. Using this strategy, the team has successfully prepared carbon nanodots with the main NIR luminescence center in aqueous solution for the first time in the world. The preparation cost of the carbon nanodots is very low, less than one percent of the cost of commercial NIR dye ICG. Moreover, the carbon nanodots are safe and non-toxic with good biocompatibility and have been successfully applied to NIR in vivo imaging and ear angiography in mouse models. This study provides new insights for the development of safe and low-cost in vivo NIR fluorescence imaging reagents. The research results have been published in the internationally renowned academic journal Advanced Science.

The 13^th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF), which is jointly organised by the China International Contractors Association and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), is going to take place in Macao from 28 to 29 September. More than 1,300 political, business and academic leading figures in the infrastructure field from all over the world will attend the Forum. With an approximate 20% increase in its scale compared to last year, this year’s IIICF aims to promote the connectivity and co-operation within the international infrastructure industry.

The 34^th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF), organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), was inaugurated on 25 September.
