External merchandise trade statistics for August 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP986 million in August 2023, down by 27.9% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP845 million) dropped by 27.4%, of which re-exports of Garments and Diamond & diamond jewellery declined by 56.8% and 47.9% respectively, while those of Articles for casino and Machines, apparatus & parts surged by 113.8% and 35.6% respectively. Value of domestic exports (MOP141 million) decreased by 30.4%, of which domestic exports of Copper & articles thereof and Garments fell by 52.1% and 46.7% respectively. Meanwhile, total merchandise import went down by 0.4% year-on-year to MOP11.32 billion; imports of Mobile phones and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products reduced by 57.4% and 43.0% respectively, whereas imports of Articles for casino and Gold jewellery showed respective growth of 493.6% and 82.9%. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP10.33 billion in August.

Employment survey for June – August 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate for June - August 2023 was 2.5% and the unemployment rate of local residents was 3.1%, down by 0.1 and 0.2 percentage points respectively from the previous period (May - July 2023). Meanwhile, the underemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 1.8%.

IAM organises seminar on radioactive contamination and food safety to deepen public’s scientific knowledge
In response to Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the ocean, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) recently organised a seminar on “radioactive contamination and food safety” designated for the public to enhance their understanding of risks by explaining the relationship between radioactive contamination and food safety. Relevant gatekeeping measures such as the two-tiered food control mechanism are also introduced in detail to the public so that they can comprehensively learn about the series of food safety regulatory measures implemented in Macao. About 100 residents attended the seminar.

Completion of optimisation works of drainage network in San Kio district for flood relief and vehicular traffic to resume on Friday afternoon
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) commenced the last phase of works for the optimisation plan of the drainage network in San Kio district for flood relief in July, adding rainwater drainage pipes in the low-lying areas near Estrada de Coelho do Amaral and Rua da Restauração and connecting to the existing box culvert in phases, with the aim of increasing the rainwater drainage capacity. Despite typhoons and rainstorms during the construction period, with active coordination and supervision, the construction works have been completed on schedule according to the plan. The vehicular traffic will resume as normal at 4:00 p.m. on 29 September.

IAM steps up inspection of food and beverage establishments for good food safety management during festivals and holiday
With the approach of the long holiday of Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, in order to safeguard food safety during the holiday peak season for the food and beverage industry, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has carried out a series of work to safeguard food safety prior to the holiday. In addition, IAM will step up inspection and promotion in restaurants and food and beverage establishments in tourist areas in Macao during the holiday to ensure food safety. IAM calls for the food industry to pay attention to the production and operation of food, the environment and the personal hygiene of staff, and perform good internal food safety management, so as to reduce the risk of outbreak of foodborne diseases.

IAM steps up environmental hygiene efforts for Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays
On the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day Golden Week, it is expected that there will be an increase in tourists visiting Macao during the long holidays. In order to keep the city clean and hygienic, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will step up cleaning efforts in various districts, add garbage bins in busy areas and tourist attractions, strengthen management and cleaning of public toilets, etc., to provide the public and the tourists with a clean and hygienic environment.

Mount Fortress Garden transformed into a distinctive night-time scenic spot presenting festive activities and a light show
Jointly organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) and Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the “Mount Fortress in the Moonlight – Special Event for the Mid-Autumn Festival for the Public” will be held from 29 September to 1 October at the Mount Fortress Garden, presenting various music performances and a light show for residents and tourists. On 29 September, the event features handicraft workshops, lantern riddles and game booths dedicated to the theme of Mid-Autumn Festival, as well as festive lighting installations and special snacks, transforming the Mount Fortress Garden into a distinctive cultural attraction through an array of activities and leisure experiences, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with the public.
