International banking statistics – March 2022
According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the proportion of international business in the local banking sector retreated in the first quarter of 2022. At end-March 2022, the share of international assets in total banking assets decreased to 86.0% from 86.3% at end-December 2021, while the share of international liabilities in total banking liabilities fell to 83.6% from 83.9%.

UM awards long-serving staff and outstanding administrative staff
The University of Macau (UM) held the 2021 Long Service Award & Outstanding Administrative Staff Award Ceremony today (17 May), in recognition of the efforts of its staff and their contributions to the university. 159 staff members received the Long Service Award for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of service respectively. The Outstanding Administrative Staff Award and the Most Creative Slogan Award were also presented at the ceremony.

Private sector construction and real estate transactions for the 1st quarter of 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 1,407 building units and parking spaces were purchased and sold in the first quarter of 2022 as per Stamp Duty record, and the total value of transactions was MOP7.29 billion, down by 28.3% and 26.4% respectively quarter-to-quarter. Purchase and sale of residential units decreased by 395 quarter-to-quarter to 826 units, and the total value fell by 31.3% to MOP5.58 billion. Number of existing residential units transacted (786 units) dropped by 24.2% and the transaction value (MOP5.29 billion) fell by 23.5%. Moreover, transaction volume (40 units) and value (MOP 285 million) of pre-sale residential units tumbled by 78.3% and 76.2% respectively quarter-to-quarter.

MUR talks urban renewal with Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District
Macau Urban Renewal Limited (MUR) visited the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District (AICZNM), and was warmly received by the association’s president Wong Kin Chong, director-general MaKin Cheong and chair of the supervisory board U Cheok Un. During the meeting, MUR Chairperson of the Board of Directors Peter Lam Kam Seng, Vice-Chairperson Leong Keng Seng, Senior Architect Nick Chan Hoi Wa and Urban Planner Joyce Tam Hoi Ian gave a presentation on the local area plan for Iao Hon Estate.

All takeaway shops required to obtain registration certificate and IAM calls for display of registration information in accordance with law
The Administrative Regulation no. 30/2021 “Registration System for Establishments of Takeaway Activities” has entered into force since November 15, 2021. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) reminds all establishments of takeaway activities operating in Macao now to complete the registration and obtain the certificate. The sector must strictly comply with the registration system in production and operation, and in particular, the registration information must be displayed to the public. Consumers should patronise takeaway shops that display the registration information in accordance with the law to ensure that the shops are regulated by IAM and safeguard their own consumption safety.

CCAC assists in detecting bribe offering by Hong Kong supplier members to facilities director of a gaming company

With the collaboration of the CCAC of Macao, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) of Hong Kong detected a case where some members of an air-conditioning system supplier from Hong Kong were suspected to offer bribes to the director of the facilities department of a gaming company of Macao. The people involved were all Hong Kong residents and the alleged offences also took place in Hong Kong. According to the information from Hong Kong, the case involved HKD22 million and the bribes amounted to HKD1.5 million. The ICAC recently laid charges against a senior marketing manager who worked in Macao and a then director of the aforesaid supplier. Relevant investigations are still under way.

UM develops bacteria-mimetic nanomedicine to enhance cancer therapies
A research group led by Wang Ruibing, associate professor in the Institute of Chinese Medical Science, University of Macau (UM), has developed a bacteria-mimetic supramolecular nanomedicine by immune cells in vivo, which can realise cell-hitchhiking delivery to solid tumours in targeted cancer therapies. The research findings have been published in the world-renowned multidisciplinary journal Science Advances.

SAR Government Strictly Regulates Job Change of Non-resident Workers and Executes “Employment Ban”

The SAR Government regulates the job change of non-resident workers in accordance with the law. According to the current “Law on the Employment of Non-resident Workers”, non-resident workers can only work for the employer and do the work of the position specified on the Non-resident Worker’s Identification Card (so-called “blue card”). The above law includes an “employment ban” on the non-resident workers as well, regulating their unethical behaviour for the purpose of changing jobs at will.
