Macao Public Library under the Cultural Affairs Bureau launches the 30th issue of Books and the City
The 30th issue of Books and the City, published by the Macao Public Library under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is now available to the public. Themed “The Distance between Life and Death”, this issue of Books and the City interviewed three people with different experiences of life and death and introduced a number of books on life issues, hoping to discuss about life and death with the public through words.

Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for March 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments dropped by 18.7% year-on-year in March 2022, with Chinese Restaurants and Western Restaurants recording respective decreases of 29.0% and 28.4%. Meanwhile, sales of the interviewed retailers fell by 34.7% year-on-year in March; Department Stores (-51.7%), Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (-51.1%), Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (-44.1%) and Adults' Clothing Retailers (-43.7%) recorded a significant fall in sales, while Supermarkets (+11.4%) registered an increase.

Results of visitor expenditure survey for the 1st Quarter of 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) rose by 6.7% year-on-year to MOP6.59 billion in the first quarter of 2022, driven by an increase in visitor arrivals. Total spending of same-day visitors (MOP1.26 billion) leapt by 114.5% year-on-year while that of overnight visitors (MOP5.33 billion) dropped by 4.7%.

UM holds international academic conference to promote interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars at home and abroad
The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) of the University of Macau (UM) recently held the Second IAS Annual Conference with the theme ‘The Power of “Truth”: A Dialogue across Disciplines’. The event attracted scholars from various renowned universities, including Stanford University, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, and Zhejiang University, who exchanged ideas with scholars in the institute on different interdisciplinary topics in areas such as literature and culture, history and society, science and technology, economics and law, as well as medicine and health.

UM to hold Congregation on 28 May
The University of Macau (UM) will hold its Congregation 2022 on 28 May (Saturday) at 4:00pm in its Sports Complex (N8) to present graduation certificates to this year’s graduates of bachelor’s degree programmes. The graduation ceremony will continue to be held in a format that combines online and in-person elements, in order to allow graduates and their families and friends from around the world to participate in the event.

International banking statistics – March 2022
According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the proportion of international business in the local banking sector retreated in the first quarter of 2022. At end-March 2022, the share of international assets in total banking assets decreased to 86.0% from 86.3% at end-December 2021, while the share of international liabilities in total banking liabilities fell to 83.6% from 83.9%.

UM awards long-serving staff and outstanding administrative staff
The University of Macau (UM) held the 2021 Long Service Award & Outstanding Administrative Staff Award Ceremony today (17 May), in recognition of the efforts of its staff and their contributions to the university. 159 staff members received the Long Service Award for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of service respectively. The Outstanding Administrative Staff Award and the Most Creative Slogan Award were also presented at the ceremony.

Private sector construction and real estate transactions for the 1st quarter of 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 1,407 building units and parking spaces were purchased and sold in the first quarter of 2022 as per Stamp Duty record, and the total value of transactions was MOP7.29 billion, down by 28.3% and 26.4% respectively quarter-to-quarter. Purchase and sale of residential units decreased by 395 quarter-to-quarter to 826 units, and the total value fell by 31.3% to MOP5.58 billion. Number of existing residential units transacted (786 units) dropped by 24.2% and the transaction value (MOP5.29 billion) fell by 23.5%. Moreover, transaction volume (40 units) and value (MOP 285 million) of pre-sale residential units tumbled by 78.3% and 76.2% respectively quarter-to-quarter.

MUR talks urban renewal with Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District
Macau Urban Renewal Limited (MUR) visited the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District (AICZNM), and was warmly received by the association’s president Wong Kin Chong, director-general MaKin Cheong and chair of the supervisory board U Cheok Un. During the meeting, MUR Chairperson of the Board of Directors Peter Lam Kam Seng, Vice-Chairperson Leong Keng Seng, Senior Architect Nick Chan Hoi Wa and Urban Planner Joyce Tam Hoi Ian gave a presentation on the local area plan for Iao Hon Estate.
