UM sets a dozen international quality standards for Chinese medicine
To support the moderate diversification of Macao’s economy, research teams at the University of Macau (UM) have made impressive progress in forging business partnerships, nurturing talent, creating platforms for international cooperation, and pushing forward the standardisation and internationalisation of Chinese medicine. The teams led by Prof Wang Yitao and Prof Li Shaoping have also established quality standards for a dozen Chinese medicinal plants for authoritative publications such as European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), United States Pharmacopeia (USP), and Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP), in order to support the health industry in Macao and other parts of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

UM completes digital humanities project QingMaps.org
The Department of History of the University of Macau (UM) has successfully completed the Digital Humanities Project www.QingMaps.org. The project consists of three enormous maps produced during the Qing dynasty and enables searches, analyses and annotations of approximately 70,000 place names.

MPI Published a New Issue of Journal of One Country Two Systems Studies
Macao Polytechnic Institute has published the new issue of the Journal of One Country Two Systems Studies (Issue 2, 2021). First printed in July 2009, this academic periodical is published by the “One Country, Two Systems” Research Centre of MPI, with the objective to give the public an insight into the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, promote research on topics related to governance and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, maintain the progress of the SAR society, and establish an academic platform for the study of “One Country, Two Systems”.

Macao Orchestra presents New Year Concert “Starry Vienna” to celebrate New Year with music aficionados
The Macao Orchestra, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, will present the “Starry Vienna – New Year Concert” on 31 December, at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Due to the impact of the pandemic, and to the fact that soprano Yuanming Song will not be able to visit Macao, the Macao Orchestra, under the baton of renowned Chinese female conductor Zhang Jiemin, will present several works with famous Chinese soprano Zhang Liping, celebrating the New Year with music aficionados.

Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – November 2021
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP215.8 billion (USD26.86 billion) at the end of November 2021. The reserves increased by 1.3% from the revised value of MOP213.1 billion (USD26.60 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-November 2021 represented 11 times the currency in circulation or 89.4% of pataca M2 at end-October 2021.

The University of Macau (UM) Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) today (14 November) held a seminar titled ‘Construction and Development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone’. Experts and scholars attended the seminar to discuss the construction and development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone (Cooperation Zone) in Hengqin from various perspectives, including system establishment, policy planning, talent development, and public administration.

Cultural Affairs Bureau announces candidates selected for the second review for the “6th Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Song Albums”
The initial review for the “6th Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Song Albums”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), has been concluded recently. The jury has selected six entrants under the album category and ten entrants under the mini album category for the second review of the programme. The selected candidates are (in arbitrary order): under the album category – Wong Hin Cheng, Tang Chi Fong, Filipe António da Silva Baptista, Sou Io Kuong, Leong Chi Long, and Loi Hou Kun; under the mini album category – Nunes Pestana Da Silva Caetano, João, Io Lou Ian, Pang Weng Sam, Si Iek Chun, Lei U Fui, Lam Shou En, Ian Hao I, Roberto Madan, Chan I and Tam Pou Ieng. Selected candidates who successfully pass the second review will be granted a subsidy of up to MOP270,000 and MOP135,000 respectively for the music production of the selected album. Selected candidates will be notified by IC via telephone and email. The date and venue for the second review will be announced later.
