Mortgage loans statistics – April 2020
According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) and commercial real estate loans (CRELs) both decreased in April 2020. With regard to the outstanding balances, RMLs remained virtually unchanged whereas CRELs witnessed an increase.

MPI Seniors Academy Taipa School Recruits New Students for Academic Year 2020/2021
The Seniors Academy (ACS) Taipa School of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) was inauguratedin November 2019, and provided a good number of 4-month short courses for 163 senior students. MPI and ABM Sign Protocol on Machine Translation System for ‘Finance + Technology’ Development
In order to demonstrate Macao’s advantages as the Sino-Portuguese financial service platform and boost industry-academia development in higher education, on 10 June 2020, the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and The Macau Association of Banks (ABM) signed the Cooperation Protocol on the ‘Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Official Document Translation System’ and the Protocol on ‘The Macau Association of Banks Scholarship’. Both parties will strengthen mutual cooperation, jointly cultivate youth talents in interdisciplinary technological innovation, promote financial cooperation between Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries, and facilitate the development of Macao’s ‘finance + technology’ and ‘Sino-Portuguese platform’.

UM, Peking University jointly hold online international accounting conference
The Business Research and Training Centre (BRTC), Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), University of Macau (UM), and the Accounting Development and Research Centre, Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, jointly held an online conference for a special issue of the leading international accounting journal Abacus. Titled ‘Accounting, Auditing and Corporate Governance in China’, the conference attracted over 250 experts and scholars from mainland China, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Macao and Hong Kong.

UM achieves new breakthrough in nucleic acid analysis technique
The University of Macau (UM) recently made new progress in nucleic acid analysis techniques. A research team from UM’s Institute of Microelectronics proposed a novel DNA amplification enhancer to significantly improve the performance of DNA amplification methods in both benchtop assays and on-chip assays in microfluidic devices. This enhancer would allow users to observe, with the naked eye, the results of nucleic acid amplification tests for different kinds of viruses, such as the novel coronavirus, thereby facilitating fast, portable virus testing for large populations. The study has been published in the well-known international journal Lab on a Chip. The article was selected as featured paper to appear in the back cover of the journal.

IFTM students supporting the development of egg waffle vending machine
This year, Tourism Retail and Marketing Management students from the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies engaged in a project to aid mbox co. Limited and Robi3 Macau co. Limited who specialise in smart vending machine. The project was to aid the development of their first vending machine that makes and sell egg waffle. This project was initially introduced in the classroom and later completed via virtual methods due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last week, the third plenary sessionof the13th National People’s Congress (NPC) held concurrently with theChinese People’sPolitical Consultative Conference (CPPCC) concluded successfully in Beijing. MPI, GDUFS and HKUSPACE Jointly Establish “Greater Bay Area Portuguese Language Education Alliance”
Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), and the School of Professional and Continuing Education, University of Hong Kong (HKUSPACE) gathered online in the morning of June 8 and signed an agreement to establish the “Greater Bay Area Portuguese Language Education Alliance”. The establishment of the Alliance aims to further implement the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” to promote development and cooperation in the education and curriculum of the three regions and to foster the integration, innovation, sharing and development of Portuguese language education via the exchange of teachers and students, the organization of joint academic seminars and academic competitions, and the deepening of cooperation and development in research projects of various aspects.
