UM holds Annual Conference of Macao Studies to explore regional development and geopolitics
The Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) of the University of Macau (UM) and the Macao Foundation jointly organised the Third Annual Conference of Macao Studies (2023). Focusing on regional development and geopolitics, this year’s conference offered scholars from Macao and around the world a platform to discuss related topics, serving to deepen understanding of Macao’s role in a broader regional and global context.

UM professor receives award for best article in scholarly journal
Joshua Ehrlich, assistant professor in the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau (UM), has been awarded the Arnold Hirsch Award for Best Article in a Scholarly Journal for 2023 for his significant contribution to the field of historical research. The article was published in the international academic journal Past & Present.

The 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Fair for Trade in Services was officially unveiled at the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center today (6 December). Under the theme of “The Origin of Service Digitalisation, the Pilot Zone of Trade Digitalisation”, the Fair attracted over 120 enterprises, including leading players from trade in services, to showcase the cutting-edge products, technologies and solutions created in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in fields such as digital trade, artificial intelligence, cross-border e-commerce, and digital and smart consumption, therefore injecting new momentum to the innovative development of trade in services in the Greater Bay Area.

“Epic Gaze” – first exhibition of artist Candida Höfer in Macao inaugurated at the Macao Museum of Art
The exhibition “Candida Höfer: Epic Gaze”, organised by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was inaugurated today (5 December) on the first floor of MAM. The opening ceremony was officiated by the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Leong Wai Man; the Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Tian Xiaoping; the Director of the Macao Daily News, Lok Po; the photographer Candida Höfer; the curators João Ó and Rita Machado; and the Director of the Macao Museum of Art, Un Sio San.

Member of US National Academy of Engineering gives talk at UM on ultrasound-enhanced gene editing for Alzheimer’s disease treatment
The University of Macau (UM) held a Doctor honoris causa Lecture titled ‘Focused Ultrasound-Enhanced Gene Editing: A Potential Therapeutic Approach for Alzheimer’s Disease’, featuring Leong Kam Weng, honorary doctor of UM and member of the US National Academy of Engineering, as the speaker. During the talk, Prof Leong presented his team’s latest research advancements in gene editing in the brains of experimental animals using viral and non-viral vectors. He also discussed the implications of this cutting-edge technology for treating Alzheimer’s disease. The talk attracted many UM faculty and students, as well as people from different sectors of the community.
