MPU Signed a Cooperation Agreement with Macao Scientific and Cultural Center in Portugal to Expand the Role of Macao as a Platform for Sino-Portuguese Cooperation
A delegation from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) attended the closing ceremony of the “Spring Seminar 2024” organized by the Macao Scientific and Cultural Center (CCCM) on the afternoon of the March 20th, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. The delegation, committed to expanding the role of Macao as a platform for Sino-Portuguese cooperation, was warmly welcomed by the President of the CCCM, Carmen Mendes. At the closing ceremony, Vivian Lei, Vice-Rector of MPU, and Mendes delivered speeches and signed on behalf of the two institutions a cooperation agreement. Teng Sio Hong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) of the Macao SAR Government, attended and witnessed the signing ceremony.

MPU and University of Lisbon signed a cooperation agreement to enhance Sino-Portuguese academic cooperation
In line with the national “Belt and Road Initiative” and to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal, a delegation led by the Vice-Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), Vivian Lei, visited the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) in Portugal on March 19th, and signed an agreement on the cooperation between the two universities with the Rector of ULisboa, Luís Ferreira. The two parties reached a consensus on various issues, including enhancing exchanges between professors and students in the fields of language, science and technology, health and other fields, developing scientific research projects, jointly organizing academic seminars and lectures, exchanging academic publications, and many other aspects. This marks a new stage in Sino-Portuguese academic cooperation.

MPU and a renowned dot-com company organized a sharing session on internships and career development in the Chinese-Portuguese field
In order to further strengthen university-enterprise cooperation, deepen university student’ understanding of the Internet industry, broaden their horizons of career development in the Chinese-Portuguese field, and enhance the quality and ability of social practice, the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the Student Affairs Office, in collaboration with the well-known dot-com company, Kuaishou, presented a seminar entitled “New Opportunities for Portuguese Learning and Translation in the Age of Self-media” to the students of MPU. Students from the Bachelor’s Programmes in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation and in Portuguese at the Faculty of Languages and Translation participated in the event and interacted with the guests in a lively atmosphere.

Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – March 2024
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today (12 April) that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP226.2 billion (USD28.07 billion) at the end of March 2024. The reserves decreased by 1.4% from the revised value of MOP229.4 billion (USD28.45 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-March 2024 represented 11 times the currency in circulation or 89.0% of pataca M2 at end-February 2024.

IAM urges the public not to consume an alcoholic drink that may pose safety risks
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) is informed of the potential risks posed by an alcoholic drink that may contain the chemical substance ethylene glycol and hasissued a food alert to the local food sector without any delay, requiring members of the sector to put an immediate halt to the supply and sale of the relevant product if they have it in stock. Meanwhile, IAM has sent personnel to carry out inspection to businesses on the market and urges the public not to consume the relevant product.

Cultural Affairs Bureau will carry out restoration works on the exterior of the Guia Lighthouse Opening hours of the site will remain unchanged during the works
The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) will carry out restoration works on the exterior of the Guia Lighthouse from 15 April (Monday). In order to ensure public safety and carry out the referred works, scaffolding will be installed outside the Guia Lighthouse and certain areas will be closed during these works, while estimating that the works will be completed by the end of May. During this period, the Fortress and Chapel will remain open to the public and the opening hours will remain unchanged.

UM releases Revised Macroeconomic Forecast for Macao 2024
The Centre for Macau Studies and the Department of Economics of the University of Macau (UM) have released the Revised Macroeconomic Forecast for Macao 2024. Based on the latest economic data in 2024, the research team anticipates that the economic slowdown in mainland China will have a relatively small impact on Macao and has, therefore, revised the projected number of visitor arrivals from mainland China to be 90% of the 2019 level. On this basis, the baseline forecast for Macao’s GDP growth is projected to be 16.8% (year-on-year real growth rate), which corresponds to 94.5% of the 2019 level, amounting to MOP 415.3 billion (calculated using the chain volume measures for the year 2021). The revised baseline forecasts for other major economic variables are as follows: the growth of exports of services is projected to be 23.4%; the overall unemployment rate is expected to be 2.2%; the unemployment rate of Macao residents is expected to be 2.8%; and the government current revenue is estimated to reach MOP 100.2 billion.

Tourist price index (TPI) for the 1st quarter of 2024
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the first quarter of 2024 went up by 4.68% year-on-year to 144.68, on account of higher hotel room rates and dearer prices of clothing and jewellery; yet, reduced prices of fireworks and firecrackers offset part of the increase. Among the various sections of goods and services, price indices of Clothing & Footwear, Accommodation and Miscellaneous Goods grew by 9.17%, 8.35% and 6.54% year-on-year respectively, while the index of Entertainment & Cultural Activities dropped by 15.29%.
