UM holds International Collegiate Programming Contest

The Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau (UM) recently held the 2023 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) (Asia Macau Regional Contest), with the aim of promoting exchange of programming skills, and enhancing students’ interest in computer programming. The regional contest in Macao drew the participation of 82 teams from 67 renowned universities and from 8 secondary schools in China. Approximately 300 students and teachers gathered at UM to compete for the regional championship and exchange ideas on programming skills.



Exhibition “Centennial Retrospective of Lok Cheong’s Art” opens at Macao Museum of Art next Friday

Organised by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organised by the Macau Artist Society, the exhibition “Centennial Retrospective of Lok Cheong’s Art” will be inaugurated on 24 November, at 5:30pm, on the third floor of the Macao Museum of Art. The exhibition presents a total of 150 artworks which include paintings by renowned Macao painter Lok Cheong, as well as some of his sketches and his friends’ remarkable works which are exhibited for the first time. The artworks include oil paintings, watercolours, Chinese paintings, drawings, manuscripts and documents, comprehensively displaying Lok Cheong’s artistic career and achievements over 50 years since the 1950s. Residents are welcome to visit the exhibition.


Visitor arrivals for October 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 2,757,308 in October 2023, representing an upsurge of 375.1%year-on-year and a rise of 19.8% month-on-month. Same-day visitors (1,451,703) and overnight visitors (1,305,605) leapt by 444.1% and 316.4% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of visitors dropped by 0.6 day year-on-year to 1.2 days; the duration for overnight visitors (2.3 days) decreased by 0.9 day whereas that for same-day visitors (0.3 day) rose by 0.1 day.


Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for September 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments went up by 35.9% year-on-year in September 2023; receipts of Western Restaurants, Chinese Restaurants and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops grew by 68.5%, 46.5% and 35.3% respectively, whereas those of Japanese & Korean Restaurants dropped by 27.9%. In addition, sales of the interviewed retailers rose by 14.4% year-on-year in September, with relatively large growth in the sales of Adults' Clothing Retailers (+35.9%) and Leather Goods Retailers (+32.5%).


Private sector construction and real estate transactions for the 3rd quarter of 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 1,030 building units and parking spaces were purchased and sold in the third quarter of 2023 as per Stamp Duty record, and the total value of transactions was MOP5.09 billion, down by 24.7% and 31.6% respectively quarter-on-quarter. Purchase and sale of residential units decreased by 250 quarter-on-quarter to 628 units, and the total value fell by 29.6% to MOP4.07 billion. Number of existing residential units transacted (609 units) dropped by 26.7% and the transaction value (MOP3.94 billion) went down by 28.1%. Besides, transaction volume (19 units) and value (MOP 130 million) of pre-sale residential units declined by 59.6% and 57.0% respectively quarter-on-quarter.





IFTM launches postgraduate programmes in events management for the upcoming academic year

The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) is to expand its portfolio of programmes with the introduction of two postgraduate programmes in events management. The two programmes are planned for the 2024/2025 academic year and will be in effect after being published in MSAR Gazette.
