IAM continues to treat endangered ancient tree in Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) continues to follow up on the condition of an endangered camphor tree in Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida. Although healing measures such as prevention and control of pest infestation, using fertiliser and medication were taken in recent months, the growth condition of the tree has not improved. To save and treat the tree, IAM has continuously cooperated with experts of Guangzhou Institute of Forestry and Landscape Architecture to carry out checks and monitoring of the tree and formulate a proposal for its treatment. Following the suggestion of the experts, pruning for height control will be carried out on 3 February (Saturday). IAM will continue to follow up on the condition of the tree and take treatment measures in hopes to revive the tree.

Faculty and Students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Visit Macao Polytechnic University to Exchange Insights on the Development of Macao's Tourism and Leisure Industry
A group of forty students and faculty members from the Vocational Training and Continuing Education College, Department of Applied Social Sciences, and Advanced Diploma in Social Work programme at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) recently visited the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) to learn about the development of Macao as a world tourism and leisure center. The exchange of ideas and discussions on teaching and development in the tourism and leisure industry between the two institutions took place in a productive atmosphere.

Temporary arrangements at the Ruins of St. Paul’s on 3 February due to the 2024 “Happy Chinese New Year” programme of activities
Due to the 2024 “Happy Chinese New Year” launching ceremony and to the “Happy Chinese New Year, Macao Full Spring” Concert to be held in the evening of 3 February at the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the forecourt and staircase of the former Mater Dei Church will be temporary closed to the public from 4:30pm on the same day. The Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt and the exhibition “Visiting the Ruins of St. Paul’s in Space and Time” – Exhibition of Virtual Reality at the Ruins of St. Paul’s will also be suspended from 4pm. The traffic control measures at Calçada de S. Paulo on weekends will be extended until 10pm. The Cultural Affairs Bureau thanks the members of the public for their understanding and cooperation.

Macao Polytechnic University launched a Professional Management Certificate Course with an integrated resort and leisure company
In order to strengthen the collaboration between higher education and the tourism and leisure industry, the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) recently offered the Professional Management Certificate Course under the MGM PRIDE Career Development Program. Thirty-one participants were awarded completion certificates. The participants greatly benefited from the program by enhancing their management knowledge and skills.

Experience the charm of traditional Portuguese music in Historic Centre of Macao Tickets for the “Fado Nights” concerts on sale from 1 February
Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), the “Fado Nights” concerts will be held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 24 March, from 7pm to 8pm, at the Dom Pedro V Theatre, featuring a total of 12 traditional fado performances. Tickets will be on sale through the Macau Ticketing Network, as well as Damai (Mainland China) and Cityline (Hong Kong) platform from 1 February.

UM launches Master of Arts in TESOL programme, providing English teachers with opportunities to advance their studies
The University of Macau (UM) will launch the Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme in the 2024/2025 academic year. The programme aims to provide advanced training and learning opportunities for both pre-service and in-service English teachers in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. Applications for the programme are now open. Individuals interested in English teaching are welcome to apply.

Transport and communications statistics for December and the whole year of 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 251,867 as at end-December 2023, up by 0.9% year-on-year; light automobiles (116,282) and heavy motorcycles (109,369) rose by 1.9% and 1.2% respectively. For the whole year of 2023, new registration of motor vehicles grew by 12.9% year-on-year to 11,974 (including 3,086 electric vehicles), of which light automobiles increased by 36.2% to 5,507 (1,343 of them were electric) while heavy motorcycles dropped by 2.8% to 5,508 (1,045 of them were electric). New registration of motor vehicles in December fell by 9.6% year-on-year to 1,107 (407 were electric vehicles). In 2023, number of traffic accidents climbed by 21.4% year-on-year to 13,563, with 8 persons killed and 4,729 persons injured. In December, there were 1,239 traffic accidents, which resulted in 1 death and 464 injuries.

The Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) of the University of Macau (UM) held the first alumni gala dinner. The event aimed to strengthen the ties between the university and its alumni, promote alumni’s sense of belonging to their alma mater, and provide a platform for alumni to engage in exchanges and give back to the university. IAM and Mainland customs optimise border crossing and inspection procedures First batch of “fresh chickens” to be supplied to Macao on 2 February
With the great support of the General Administration of Customs of People's Republic of China, the first batch of “fresh chickens”, which is offered for sale on the day of slaughter, will be supplied to Macao on 2 February. In order for “fresh chickens” to arrive in the Macao market within one and a half hours after leaving the factories, Guangdong Province and Macao coordinate for rapid border-crossing and priority inspection and quarantine procedures. To make it easier for consumers to identify the products, the “fresh chickens” supplied to Macao must have rings showing the date of slaughter. Product information, the date and time of slaughter, etc. must also be printed on the outer packaging. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has already developed the “Hygienic Guidelines on Retail Sale of Fresh Chickens”, in addition to holding briefings with the sector to explain the food hygiene requirements for all stages of transport, storage, display and sale of “fresh chickens”.
