MPU-Bell English Centre Hosts Popular English Teacher Training Courses for Shanghai Teachers

To promote exchanges and collaboration with mainland higher education institutions and to support the Macao SAR government's vision of 'Education + Tourism' for diversified economic development, the MPU-Bell English Centre and Shanghai Normal University joined forces to organise two summer English teacher training courses from July 16th to August 3rd These professional development courses welcomed English teachers from numerous colleges and universities in Shanghai to participate. Throughout the courses, participating teachers received high-quality English teaching training and development while experiencing Macao's rich cultural characteristics. The courses garnered high praise from the attendees and yielded fruitful results.


UM professor’s book published by Cambridge University Press

Joshua Ehrlich, assistant professor in the Department of History of the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities, recently had his book, The East India Company and the Politics of Knowledge, published by Cambridge University Press. The book is the product of a decade of research in over 30 archives spanning three continents. It shows how the British East India Company used knowledge to consolidate its commercial and political power, thus constituting the major new study of the company.



MPU Published Conference Proceedings of the Fourteenth Higher Education International Conference

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has published the “Proceedings of the Fourteenth Higher Education International Conference on Online Teaching and Sustainable Quality Assurance: Challenges and Perspectives”. The proceedings contain selected papers from the online conference of the same name co-organised by MPU and the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) in November 2022. The conference discussed the current situation and the future of quality assurance in higher education, innovation and influence in educational evaluation, the mechanism and effectiveness of online teaching in various disciplines, and digitisation of quality assurance, and participants benefited from the exchanges at this conference. The publication of the proceedings provides reference measures and research examples for the present and future of online modes of teaching and learning in higher education, as well as quality assurance for sustainable development.



Nobel laureate Shuji Nakamura shares background story and development of LED with UM members

The University of Macau (UM) today (2 August) held a Doctor honoris causa Lecture, with Prof Shuji Nakamura, who received a Doctor of Science honoris causa degree from UM in 2020 and the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, as the keynote speaker. Prof Nakamura gave a talk titled ‘Background Story and Development of High Efficiency Blue InGaN LEDs and Laser Diodes’, and shared his experience in the invention of high efficiency blue LEDs and laser diodes, as well as his perspectives on their future applications. He also met with UM’s management and researchers to discuss the development of cutting-edge research.


UM, Well Link Bank sign MOU and co-organise essay competition

The Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) of the University of Macau (UM) and Well Link Bank today (2 August) jointly held the MOU Signing Ceremony and Press Conference on 2023 Essay Competition for High School Students at UM. Both parties expressed hope that the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) can help realise the complementarity of resources and mutual support between industry and academia. The essay competition also marks an important milestone in the cooperation between the two parties.


Congratulations to MPU Student Wong Weng Ian for Winning the Silver Medals in the Women’s Jianshu and Qiangshu at the 31st FISU World University Games

Ms. Wong Weng Ian, a member of the Macao sports delegation and student of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), achieved remarkable success in the women's Jianshu and Qiangshu events, securing two silver medals, at the 31st FISU World University Games currently taking place in Chengdu. Professor Im Sio Kei, Rector of Macao Polytechnic University, enthusiastically congratulated Ms. Wong for her outstanding performance and praised her along with other MPU athletes for their dedication and competitive spirit in the games. Their achievements not only inspired and energised MPU students and staff but also showcased the exceptional qualities of MPU students. As always, Macao Polytechnic University would continue to support the development of student sports and contribute to the promotion of the “Big Health” industry, as well as making contributions to the nation and Macao.


CE to attend Legislative Assembly session on 11 August

The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, will attend a plenary session of the Legislative Assembly on 11 August, to answer Legislative Assembly members’ questions on Government policy and social issues.


Applications are open for phase 3 of the special weekend market in the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards

The Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15 have been inaugurated recently. In order to enrich the cultural tourism and leisure experience of the public and tourists, a featured market has been set up in the Shipyards between Fridays and Sundays, as well as on public holidays. Applications for stalls in Phase 3 are open from today to 9 August. All interested parties are welcome to register and registration is free of charge.
