Prof. Gao Jianguo, a researcher of the Institute of Geology of China Earthquake Administration, suggested that by adopting the Chinese way of thinking, that is to carry out a comprehensive research on Chain Disaster Research, we can make better disasters forecast. In his thesis, “The Chain Disaster Research and Forecast in China”, Prof. Gao described the relations between the earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, in 2004 and the flooding in Southern China in 2005, as well as the connection between Wenchuan earthquake in China and other disasters.
He said he believed that only by combining the achievements in seismology, meteorology, oceanography, hydrology and geochemistry could reliable disaster forecasts be attained. Professor Gao said that the population, assets and wealth of buildings are highly congested in cities, so devastating disasters could results in a catastrophic urban crisis, thus it is important to study the relations between different disasters.
