Class resumption at UM begins today

In response to the current development of the epidemic, the University of Macau (UM) will partially resume its classes starting today (20 April). Students graduating this year will be the first to return to classroom. PhD and master’s oral defences will resume on 4 May. The rest of UM students will continue to take classes online until the end of the semester.


Environmental statistics 2019

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the annual mean air temperature in Macao rose by 0.8ºC year-on-year to 23.6ºC in 2019, marking the warmest year since records began in 1952. The highest temperature of the year was 35.7ºC in July and August, down slightly by 0.1ºC compared to the highest value in 2018; the lowest temperature was recorded at 8.4ºC in January, up by 3.8ºC. Total precipitation was 2,248.0mm, an increase of 452.4mm year-on-year.

The DSEJ Announces the Preparatory Plan for Class Resumption in May for Non-Tertiary Education Schools

In response to the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic in Macao, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (hereinafter referred to as the “DSEJ”) announced the suspension of classes for non-tertiary education schools after the lunar new year holiday. During the class suspension period, the DSEJ has kept close communication with the health department, education institutions and persons in charge of schools to actively study on formulating a class resumption preparatory plan which takes students’ safety as the utmost concern. There is a consensus that senior secondary schools are given priority to resume classes first and there will be phased resumption of classes for the other grades.


Macao Institute for Tourism Studies Postgraduate Programmes are open for application

Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) launched its first postgraduate programmes last year. Making full use of the unique advantages and various resources of tourism education in Macao, the programmes will help enhance the professionalism of tourism practitioners in Macao and the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area while promoting the sustainable development of the tourism industry in the region. The 2020/21 academic year postgraduate programmes are open for application from 14 April to 31 May to provide further study opportunities for those who wish to improve their professionalism.

The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, will deliver the Policy Address for the Fiscal Year 2020 tomorrow (20 April) at the Legislative Assembly.



UM study reveals new mechanism by which autophagy gene modulates inflammatory bowel disease

Macao is one of the cities in Asia with the highest incidence of inflammatory bowel disease. A research team in the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), University of Macau (UM), led by Assistant Professor Lu Jiahong, recently discovered through a collaborative study with research institutions in mainland China and the United States, that the autophagy-related gene NRBF2 is involved in regulating the clearance of apoptotic cells in the process of intestinal inflammation, thereby affecting the course of inflammatory bowel disease. The discovery points to new strategies for treating inflammatory bowel disease. The study has been published in the online version of the well-known international journal Autophagy.
