UM delegation visits UK to forge academic and research collaboration with six renowned UK universities
A delegation from the University of Macau (UM), led by UM Rector Prof Yonghua Song, visited six top-notch higher education institutions in the United Kingdom, in an effort to forge academic and research collaborations with universities in the UK, and exchange experience in higher education development. According to Prof Song, UM has a long tradition of academic collaboration with British universities. This strategic visit and the implementation of the collaboration will further enhance UM’s ties and cooperation with British universities. They are also in line with UM’s mission of internationalisation and contribute to UM’s role as a major platform for international higher education collaboration in the west of the Greater Bay Area.

July is a Contribution Month and FSS Reminds Residents to Pay Contributions on Time
July is a contribution month of the Social Security Fund. Employers are required to pay in this month the contributions of the obligatory system for their local long-term employees for the second quarter of 2019. If they have hired a non-resident worker, they are also required to pay the employment fee as well. In addition, beneficiaries of the arbitrary system are also required to pay contributions in July. To save time waiting in line, the Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) calls for members of the public to make full use of the electronic payment options. Businesses, or residents of the Islands District can also go to the new Centro de Serviços da RAEM das Ilhas (Área de Segurança Social) to make their payments.

Transport and communications statistics for May 2019
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles totalled 238,010 as at end-May, up slightly by 0.1% year-on-year; light automobiles (107,929) and heavy motorcycles (97,819) increased by 1.0% and 2.0% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in May decreased by 16.6% year-on-year to 887, with light automobiles (416) and heavy motorcycles (408) falling by 13.5% and 22.0% respectively. In the first five months of 2019, new registration of motor vehicles declined by 24.2% year-on-year to 4,887. Number of traffic accidents rose by 6.1% year-on-year to 1,075 in May, involving 371 victims and 1 of them was killed. In the first five months, there were 5,191 traffic accidents and 1,799 traffic casualties.

Wealth Partaking Scheme 2019
In order to share the fruits of economic development with general public, the Macau SAR government has announced the “Wealth Partaking Scheme 2019”, under which, local permanent residents are entitled to receiving 10,000 patacas and non-permanent residents 6,000 patacas. The Administrative Regulation No.17/2019 has published in the government gazette and its implementation will officially start in early July.

IFT students help local entrepreneurs to pilot a new tourism app
Year-four students from the Institute for Tourism Studies engaged in an industrial project led by Dr. Fernando Lourenço to pilot a new smart-phone application called eTour developed by a local startup company. This smart-phone application (app) is a platform where tour-guides can promote and sell their offerings while tourists can pick their desired services and products. The ingenious part of this app is that it can use artificial intelligence to match up the requirements from the tourists to potential tour-guides who can fulfil their needs.

UM graduate wins New World Mathematical Award
Lin Xuelei, a graduate of a master’s programme of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), recently won a Master Thesis Awards-Silver Prize at the 2019 New World Mathematical Awards (NWMA) held at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This is the first time a scholar from Macao has won this award.

Judiciary Police's Storm Surge Evacuation Simulation Drill to raise Command and Response Abilities
Typhoon season is drawing close, the Judiciary Police has organized another “Storm Surge Evacuation plan in Low-lying areas during Typhoon” simulation drill on 30 June 2019, under the coordination of the Unitary Police Service, to facilitate a quick, safe and orderly evacuation during storm surge and typhoon. In the meantime, simulation drills were also conducted among 6 gaming companies with the participation of the Judiciary Police and the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau to review their disaster management and evacuation procedures.

GMBPF is well-prepared and exhibition carnival opens in late July
The “Guangdong & Macao Branded Products Fair 2019” (2019GMBPF), jointly organised by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province, will be held at the Venetian Macao from July 26 to 28. Embracing trade, cultural exchanges, shopping, leisure and entertainment, this year’s fair will turn itself into a “refreshing carnival” for exhibitors and visitors by striving to provide all participants a wonderful time and adding new Macao-featured elements inspired by the opportunities arising from the country’s fast development and Macao’s own advantages.

“A Cherished Memory from 1999 ― Archives Exhibition in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao to the Motherland” inaugurated
The “2nd Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is going to present residents and tourists a series of highlight activities. Among which, “A Cherished Memory from 1999 ― Archives Exhibition in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao to the Motherland”, organized by the Archives of Macao, was inaugurated on 28 June, at 6pm. The exhibition is held until 27 December and admission is free. In conjunction with the exhibition, a thematic lecture will be held on 29 June, at 3pm, at the Archives of Macao. All are welcome.
