UM develops two-dimensional angstrom-porous titania as novel proton-conducting membrane

A research team led by Sun Pengzhan, assistant professor in the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) at the University of Macau (UM), participated in the development of a novel two-dimensional proton-conducting material, angstrom-porous titania monolayer. This novel material, designed for hydrogen-based technologies such as fuel cells, offers high temperature resistance, high proton conductivity, and perfect proton selectivity. It addresses the problem of existing proton-exchange membrane being prone to dehydration and failure at high temperatures. The research has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.


Visitor arrivals for December and the whole year of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 34,928,650 in 2024, an increase of 23.8% year-on-year. Same-day visitors (18,884,882) and overnight visitors (16,043,768) grew by 35% and 12.8% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, in view of the growth in the proportion of same-day visitors, the average length of stay of visitors (1.2 days) shortened by 0.1 day year-on-year in 2024, with that of overnight visitors remaining unchanged at 2.3 days.


Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for November 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments went up by 1.9% year-on-year in November 2024, with receipts of Japanese & Korean Restaurants rising by 12.6%. Meanwhile, sales of the interviewed retailers fell by 9.2% year-on-year in November; sales of retailers of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery, Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles and Leather Goods dropped by 24%, 12.8% and 11.2% respectively, while sales of Motor Vehicle Retailers increased by 26.9%.


MPU Awards Scholarships to 600 Outstanding Students

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) held the 2025 Scholarship Award Ceremony at the University Auditorium, awarding scholarships to 600 outstanding students in recognition of their excellent performance in academic and professional fields. MPU encourages students to uphold the spirit of love for the country and Macao, to pursue excellence and persevere, and to contribute to the development of both the country and Macao.


List of winners is unveiled for Photo Contest and Student Drawing Contest of the 32nd Macao International Fireworks Display Contest

Organized by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the 32ndMacao International Fireworks Display Contest in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR was held as a success in September and October last year (2024). The two parallel activities, the Photo Contest and Student Drawing Contest, enjoyed great popularity among photography enthusiasts and students. Among a total of 1,770 entries received, 78 works are awarded. There are winners of the first, second, third and merit awards in each category.


Official launch of direct linkage between Central Moneymarkets Unit of Hong Kong and Central Securities Depository System of Macao

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) jointly announced today (21 January) the official launch of the direct linkage between the Central Moneymarkets Unit (CMU) operated by CMU OmniClear Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Exchange Fund), and the central securities depository (CSD) operated by Macao Central Securities Depository and Clearing Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AMCM). The direct linkage aims to promote the development of the bond markets in the two regions.



Exquisite gold and silver artworks exhibited at Tap Seac Gallery highlighting the charm of arts and crafts classified as intangible cultural heritage of Hebei and Guizhou

Organised by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the Hebei Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Guizhou Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, coordinated by the Centre for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and co-organised by the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the exhibition “Shining Art - Gold and Silver Handicraft Exhibition of Hebei and Guizhou Provinces” will be inaugurated on 24 January (Friday), at 6:30pm, at the Tap Seac Gallery. All are welcome to attend. In order to allow residents to learn more about the gold and silver craftsmanship of Hebei and Guizhou Provinces, the organisers will host workshops on 8 and 9 February. Admission to the workshops is free and all are welcome to register.


Commemorative Coin of Lunar Year of the Snake

Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau will start to sell the commemorative coin of Lunar Year of the Snake released by the Monetary Authority of Macao at the Philatelic Shop of General Post Office on 20th January 2025 (Monday) . The selling prices are as follows:


IPIM Visits Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan and Jiangmen Fostering Regional Economic Co-operation and Helping Companies Go Global Together

The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (hereinafter referred to as the “IPIM”) visited Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen—four cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—in January 2025. During the visit, they met with 12 local government and business associations, collaborating with trade promotion agencies to study and assess the plans for advancing regional economic and trade co-operation in the new phase of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. They actively sought to attract “1+4” industries, leveraging Macao's unique function as a Chinese-Portuguese-speaking countries platform and the advantages of its open business environment to help enterprises and products “go global”.
