Results of wholesale and retail survey 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that there were 15,824 wholesale & retail establishments, market stalls and fixed street stalls operating in 2022, an increase of 935 year-on-year; total number of persons engaged rose by 2,330 to 65,269. Receipts and expenditure of Wholesale & Retail Trade dropped by 6.4% and 3.3% year-on-year to MOP105.01 billion and MOP99.97 billion respectively. Gross Surplus declined by 36.4% year-on-year to MOP6.57 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled MOP16.89 billion, down by 17.0% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation rose by 19.1% year-on-year to MOP1.10 billion, mainly driven by an increase in major renovation works of some retail shops.

Director Lei Wai Nong Visits Time-honored Big Health Enterprise in Zhangzhou
During the “Macao Week in Fujian•Xiamen”, Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao SAR Government Lei Wai Nong went to Zhangzhou City and visited a renowned time-honored local brand – Zhangzhou Pien Tze Huang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, with a view to seizing the development opportunities of Macao’s “1+4” industrial diversification and the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin (Co-operation Zone) to create more possibilities of in-depth co-operation between Fujian and Macao in the big health sector.

External merchandise trade statistics for September 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.16 billion in September 2023, up by 16.5% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP1.01 billion) grew by 17.8%, of which re-exports of Diamond & diamond jewellery and Perfumes jumped by 357.8% and 292.0% respectively, while those of Machines, apparatus & parts and Wine declined by 55.2% and 53.5% respectively. Value of domestic exports (MOP150 million) increased by 8.1%, of which domestic exports of Pharmaceutical products & organic chemicals and Garments expanded by 64.5% and 56.6% respectively, while those of Copper & articles thereof dropped by 48.7%. Meanwhile, total merchandise import went down by 6.9% year-on-year to MOP11.86 billion; imports of Perfumes, Mobile phones and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products reduced by 52.8%, 42.6% and 38.5% respectively, whereas imports of Articles for casino and Gold jewellery showed respective growth of 546.7% and 30.1%. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP10.70 billion in September.

Commemorative Postmark Cancellation Service of “The 20th Anniversary of the Fuhong Society of Macau”
To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Fuhong Society of Macau, Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau announces that a Temporary Post Counter will be set up at Rua Sul do Patane e Rua do General Ivens Ferraz, N.º 363, 381 e 403, Edifício Lei Seng Kok, R/C, Fuhong Society of Macau Pou Choi Center, from 11:00 to 18:00 on 4th November 2023, to provide the commemorative postmark cancellation service for “The 20th Anniversary of the Fuhong Society of Macau”.

5th Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries and 26th Lusofonia Festival inaugurated offering multicultural experiences through the synergy between the events
Under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, with the support of the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Municipal Affairs Bureau, TDM - Teledifusão de Macau, S.A., the Macao Institute for Tourism+ Studies, and Air Macau Company Limited, the 5th “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries” is held from October to December this year. The event not only integrates the “2023 GEG Lusofonia Festival”, but also features 70 sessions of activities in seven series, including the “Annual Arts Exhibition between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”, the “China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries Film Festival”, the “Camané and Macao Chinese Orchestra Concert”, the “Chinese and Portuguese Picture Book Fair”, “Traditional Music and Dance Performance in the Community”, and wine tasting workshops, counting with the participation of nearly 600 artists and performers, making good use of revitalised historical districts, offering residents and tourists multicultural experiences.

UM holds First International Forum on Chinese and Portuguese Languages to promote exchange and cooperation
The First International Forum on Chinese and Portuguese Languages concluded successfully. The forum was jointly organised by the Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Confucius Institute of the University of Macau (UM) with assistance from the UM library. More than 40 experts and scholars from different universities engaged in academic exchanges on Chinese and Portuguese literature, linguistics, culture, translation, teaching, and other related fields. Participants highly praised the forum and hoped that it can create a broader platform for exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in various fields.
