Gross domestic product for the 2nd Quarter of 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, in the wake of the latest wave of the pandemic, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declined by 39.3% year-on-year in real terms in the second quarter of 2022. (A year-on-year fall of 66.3% in GDP was recorded in the second quarter of 2020.) Number of visitor arrivals went down by 27.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022 amid the pandemic, with that of overnight visitors decreasing by 47.0%. As a result, exports of services dipped by 48.6% year-on-year, of which exports of gaming services and exports of other tourism services tumbled by 69.6% and 41.4% respectively; besides, exports of goods dropped by 36.0%. Domestic demand shrank further by 12.2% year-on-year owing to a decline in gross fixed capital formation. Imports of goods and services reduced by 20.0% and 12.0% respectively. The implicit deflator of GDP, which measures the overall changes in prices, went down by 0.9% year-on-year.

Employment survey for May – July 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate and the unemployment rate of local residents for May-July 2022 rose by 0.4 and 0.6 percentage points from the previous period (April-June 2022) to 4.1% and 5.4% respectively, owing to the suspension of most industrial and commercial activities during the “relatively static” period amid the latest wave of the pandemic. Besides, the underemployment rate increased by 9.3 percentage points to 13.4%.

Cheoc Van Swimming Pool and Cheoc-Van Nautical Centre to resume service
After emergency repair work and cleaning, Cheoc Van Swimming Pool and Cheoc-Van Nautical Centre of the Sports Bureau, which were affected by typhoon earlier, will reopen on 27 August (Saturday). Online booking service have also resumed for pre-purchase ticket two days in advance and online purchase on-the-spot ticket for Cheoc Van Swimming Pool to allow the public to continue swimming activities and exercises.

Reorganisation of Horta da Mitra Municipal Market to commence in first quarter of 2023 for preservation of façade, update of facilities and layout and separation of dry and wet zones

Temporary closure of sports facilities of the Sports Bureau affected by typhoon
Due to Tropical Storm Ma-on, Cheoc Van Swimming Pool and Cheoc-Van Nautical Centre of the Sports Bureau have been affected to varying degrees. After inspection and evaluation, the affected facilities have been temporarily closed for emergency repair work and cleaning in consideration of public safety. The Sports Bureau aims to resume operation of the facilities as soon as possible. The date of reopening of the facilities will be announced in due course.

MICE statistics for the 2nd quarter of 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 91 MICE events were held in Macao in the second quarter of 2022, a decrease of 56 year-on-year; the number of participants & attendees dropped by 4.0% to 306,000.

Cultural Affairs Bureau launches a variety of products inspired by museums’collections
The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym) has developed 20 products by drawing inspiration from its museums’ rich collections of artefacts, including museum-collection face masks, umbrellas and 3D postcards. The products are now on sale in limited quantities at a number of locations in Macao.
