Transport and communications statistics for June 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 247,134 as at end-June 2022, up by 0.9% year-on-year; light automobiles (113,153) and heavy motorcycles (106,369) increased by 0.9% and 2.4% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in June declined by 65.3% year-on-year to 383 (69 of them were electric vehicles). There were 217 heavy motorcycles (41 of them were electric) and 155 light automobiles (23 of them were electric), representing decreases of 61.5% and 68.8% respectively. In the first half of 2022, new registration of motor vehicles dropped by 23.7% year-on-year to 4,955. Number of traffic accidents in June fell by 14.9% year-on-year to 904, with 341 persons injured. In the first half year, there were 5,805 traffic accidents, which resulted in 5 deaths and 2,046 injuries.


UM professor’s book receives Distinguished Book Award from Asian Criminological Society

A book co-authored by Liu Jianhong, Distinguished Professor of the Faculty of Law at the University of Macau (UM), and Liang Bin, professor of sociology at Oklahoma State University, recently received the 2022 Distinguished Book Award from the Asian Criminological Society (ACS). Titled ‘Chinese Netizens' Opinions on Death Sentences: Empirical Examination’, the book was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2021 and has attracted a lot of attention in the academia. ACS selects annually one best book from all books published on the topic of crime and justice in Asia to give this award.

Small and medium-sized enterprise credit statistics – First half of 2022

According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, newly approved small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) credit dropped in the first half of 2022. In the meantime, the outstanding balance of SME loans retreated while the share of SME loans to major industries remained stable.

The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, today said the town-twinning initiative between the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) of the People’s Republic of China, and the Água Grande District in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, would help seize fresh opportunities arising from the “Belt and Road” initiative, by giving better play to the respective advantages of the two places.
