UM and several renowned universities jointly hold forum on responsible innovation during COVID-19

Scholars from government think tanks and renowned universities attend the forum

The Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) of the University of Macau (UM), the Technology and Management Centre for Development (TMCD) of the University of Oxford, the China Institute for Science and Technology Policy (CISTP) of Tsinghua University, the Institutes of Science and Development (CASISD) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the Sino-UK Innovation Policy and Management Research Network recently jointly held an online forum titled ‘Responsible Innovation in the Covid-19 Era and Beyond’.

The forum brought together renowned experts from government think tanks and leading universities, including the Development Research Centre (DRC) of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the CASISD, Tsinghua University, the University of Oxford, the University of Surrey, the University of Sussex, and UM. The event attracted approximately 300 participants from around the world.

Jean Chen, dean of the FBA; Prof Pan Jiaofeng, president of the CASISD; and Xue Lan, dean of Schwarzman College and director of CISTP at Tsinghua University, officiated at the forum’s opening ceremony.

The forum consisted of two discussion sessions. The first discussion session, which was moderated by Jason Xiao, head of UM’s Department of Accounting and Information Management, was focused on the engagement of environmental, social, and governance practices in innovation activities. During the event, Lu Xiao, a professor at the CASISD; Adrian Ely, a professor of the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex; Maggie Fu, a professor in the FBA at UM; and Hou Wenxuan, chair in corporate finance of Business School at the University of Edinburgh, had in-depth discussions on this topic.

The second discussion session, which was moderated by Yu Jiang, a professor at the CASISD, mainly dealt with the development of responsible digital innovations for inclusive and sustainable development. During the event, Wim Vanhaverbeke, a professor of digital innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Surrey; Liang Zheng, deputy director of the CISTP at Tsinghua University; Jacky Hong, head of the Department of Management and Marketing at UM; and Emre Korkmaz, a researcher in the TMCD at the University of Oxford, presented their latest research findings.

At the end of the event, Prof Fu Xiaolan, founding director of the TMCD at the University of Oxford; Prof Ma Mingjie, director-general of the Research Department of Innovation Development at DRC; and Prof Xiong Yu, associate dean international of the University of Surrey and director of the university’s Centre for Innovation and Commercialisation, each gave a speech to conclude the event, providing insightful analyses and suggestions for how to better understand and promote responsible innovation in a post-pandemic era.
