External merchandise trade statistics for August 2018
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for August 2018 amounted to MOP1.02 billion, up by 26.7% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP907 million) increased by 30.9%, with that of Diamond & diamond jewellery and Watches surging by 191.3% and 145.4% respectively; moreover, value of domestic exports (MOP112 million) grew by 0.7%, with that of Tobacco increasing by 62.5%. Total merchandise import rose by 22.5% year-on-year to MOP7.58 billion, of which imports of Motor cars & motorcycles and Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products expanded by 86.6% and 66.7% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in August amounted to MOP6.56 billion.

Macao’s Base Rate of the Discount Window Raised to 2.5%
The Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) raised the Base Rate of the Discount Window today (27 September 2018) by 25 basis points to 2.5%. It has been the third time for the AMCM to raise the policy rate so far this year.

MGTO actively prepares for 1st October Golden Week
Including seven days (1st – 7th October) in total, the 1st October Golden Week will start on 1st October. The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has taken an array of measures in vigorous preparation for the approach of the peak period, such as sending reminders to tourism industry operators and visitors by letter and mobile text respectively, interdepartmental sharing of information, scrupulous inspections, food guide publication, as well as delegating manpower at tourist spots to attend to visitor enquiries and so forth. Through the diverse measures above, MGTO has made unreserved efforts to cater for the needs of residents and visitors as well as to optimize the tourism environment and service quality in Macao.

UM’s first English MOOC officially launched
The first massive open online course (MOOC) developed by the University of Macau (UM), entitled ‘Creativity’, was officially launched today (26 September). Students and Macao residents can access the free online course on the MOOC platform XuetangX.com. UM’s Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) Lionel Ni hopes that the course will help learners develop creative thinking skills amid an all-English learning environment. He says that the MOOC is open to learners from around the world, and represents UM’s effort to contribute to higher education in Macao and China by sharing quality education resources online.

Results of travel agencies survey 2017
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 210 travel agencies were operating in 2017, an increase of 1 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged rose by 5.9% to 4,500. Attributable to the increase in outbound residents using services of travel agencies, receipts of the industry (MOP 8.00 billion) grew by 20.7% year-on-year; meanwhile, expenditure rose by 19.8% to MOP 7.61 billion.

UM launches Macao Economic Database Project
The University of Macau (UM) today (26 September) announced the launch of the Macao Economic Database Project. The project aims to create a comprehensive database that will include all of Macao’s major economic indicators. The database is expected to help researchers, students, and the general public to better understand Macao’s economic and social development so that effective actions can be taken to increase the quality of life of Macao residents.
